Happy New Year!!

Well, here we are. New year, new decade and all that jazz. I had a pretty rough 2009, so I am determined to make the best out of 2010. No more sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. No more pining away for lost love. No more living in the land of "what ifs" and "well, if I had done this...". None of that. Get on with life!!

I thought I was going to spend New Year's alone, but then my friend chatted with me on facebook and invited me to a cheap party up in Saratoga. It was really fun and I actually ended up seeing one of my fellow derby fresh meat girls there!! Kangaroo Meat Skewer was there with her girlfriend and a bunch of other friends. How funny is that?! So, we all rang in the New Year together, and even though I didnt' get my New Year's kiss, it was alright.

The next day, I went down to NYC to reprise my role as Yitzhak in my Hedwig shadowcast troupe, The Midnight Checkout Queens. If you don't know what a shadowcast is, it's where you act out the movie in front of the screen, a la Rocky Horror. We were performing at the Brooklyn Museum which meant hauling all of our stuff out there, which was quite the adventure. It was a lot of fun though, we hadn't done the show in over 2 years so it was really nice to see everyone again.

So far, I'm doing a pretty good job updating this thing on a regular basis. *knock on wood* Ofcourse, now that I've said that, it'll probably be a year and a half until I update again!! hehehe Until next time, blogosphere.

Leaving the Big Apple!!

Well everybody, the time is closely approaching when I leave the Big Apple to move to the capital city of Albany. I will be starting my job as a Clinical Dietitian at Albany Medical Center's HIV Clinic on the 2nd (technically the 3rd, since the 2nd is for orrientation). I found a 3BR apartment for $700, which is crazy to me because that's about what I'm paying right now in Brooklyn for a room in an apartment!!!

I'm very happy to be moving upstate as it gets me that much closer to Dana (she only lives about an hour north of Albany) and once I move up there I'll be able to see her every weekend, as opposed to every 2 or 3 weekends!! But I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little sad to be leaving the big city. Luckily, it's not that far away that I'm going. Albany is only about 3 hours from here on the bus so I am planning on coming back on a pretty regular basis!! And who knows, me and Dana may end up moving back here some day!

So, I thought I'd come up with a list of the things I will miss most and miss least about life in NYC.

What I will miss most about NYC
All the friends I have made here over the past year and a half
The nightlife
The ability to find anything you might ever need
The arts (theatre, ballet, etc)
The gorgeous views from the subways that go over the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges
The way NYC doesn't let you get too wrapped up in yourself, it always has a way of keeping you in check
It's the city that never sleeps, what more do I have to say?!

What I will miss least about NYC
Rude people
Late trains and/or getting to the subway platform right as a train is pulling away
Tourists
Poseurs
Hipsters
Roommates (not that I don't like my roommates, it will just be nice to have my own apartment for once!!)
Loud neighbors
Greyhound buses to see mi amor!!

My next post on this blog will likely be from Albany, so stay tuned!! :)

Yummy!!

So, on the way back from work today I needed to go to the bodega anyway to get some much needed TP and had a bit of a sweets craving so I picked up this pack of Mentos in a purple roll.

I've never seen purple Mentos so I had to get them. The label said "rasa anggur", and I obvioulsy had no idea what that meant, but needless to say, I got them anyway. What ever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?

So, I brought them home and noticed a note at the top of the label stating "For Sale In Indonesia Only". God, I love bodega's!!! They get all the best third world candy!! But anywho, these things are yummy, yummy!! Grape flavored Mentos!! But they also had a bit of a lychee taste to them (and anybody who knows me knows how obsessed I am with lychees). We need to get these fantabulous grape Mentos nationwide, not just in seedy little bodegas in NYC!

Just wanted to share my new discovery with you all. Now, I'm off to devour the rest of these yummy purple gifts from the Gods!!

Drowning
music and lyrics by jay brannan

it’s four a.m. again
father, forgive me this sin
uncomfortable in this life, yeah
i can’t put down this knife, yeah

i’m carving words in my arms, baby
hey, scars are part of my charm, maybe
i need the touch of a hand
this isn’t what i had planned

chorus:
i need relief from this life
i wanna slip away into the night
don’t wanna see the sun again
but can’t get swallowed up by this tragic whirlwind
i wish the ocean was warm
i feel like drowning

i’m losing my faith in me
i can’t remember the last time i felt free
from voices inside my head
when i taste liberation, they just feed me fear instead
you say i’m out of controlat least i still have a soul
no, i don’t need your advice
some compassion would be nice

chorus

i can’t take any more of your pills
they hold my head up
but still it feels so wrong
i can’t believe the price that i’ve paid
for this chemically-induced, perceivably ideal, take-it-with-a-glass-of-water day

chorus

NO DANCING IN NEW YORK CITYThursday Feb 22, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Should you find yourself in a bar in New York City, and the music playing makes you want to get up and dance, please resist the urge. A state court is upholding the city's Prohibition era law that bans social dancing in bars, restaurants and certain clubs.

Those who like to get up and boogie sued, arguing the 80-year-old law illegally infringes on their right of free expression. But the court says recreational dancing isn't a form of protection that's protected either by the state or U-S constitutions.

I'm depressed!!

I always seem to get down in the evenings. Doesn't seem to happen as much during the day, just at night. Maybe it's because the reality of not having someone to snuggle up to in bed finally gets to me at the end of the day. Maybe it's something else completely...chemical imbalance, seasonal affective disorder or something like that. ;)

Whatever it is, I know it's not nice. And it's especially not nice on Valentine's Day. The fates seem intent on keeping me and my beloved apart for as long as possible. There are absolutely no jobs upstate for a dietitian and no librarian positions down here in the city. DAMMIT!!!

I know in the grand scheme of things my life could be a lot worse but is it really so much to ask to be near my soulmate?! Answer me that, fate!!!

*incoherent grumbling* Don't mind me, just bitchy and missing mi amor, not a good combination!! Although I do have to count my blessings. This is the first Valentines Day that I've had someone to call my own (don't know if I should count last year as we were still in the very beginning stages of our relationship and had only met each other face to face once). And I couldn't be happier. I seriously don't know what I would do without my soulmate. Adrift in a sea of depression and uncertainly most likely. But she's my port in the storm and my lighthouse leading me home safely.

Luckily, I only have 2 more days to wait until I see my Miss D again. Yay!!!

Broadway is the happiest place on earth.

Everyone is an asshole when it's that time of the month.

That is all.

Happy unimaginative, consumerist-oriented, and entirely arbitrary, manipulative and shallow interpretation of romance day.

Morbid Madness

This past weekend, with my best gal by my side, I ventured out to the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

A couple days prior I had seen a show on PBS about different areas and cool places to go in Brooklyn, and this place looked pretty intriguing. To give a bit of history on the cemetery, it was built in the1838, during Victorian times. Back then, death was a prevalent part of their society so they wanted a cemetery that wasn’t so “doom and gloomy”. When it was being built, it was meant to be a cemetery-cum-park, and indeed, when it did open, it became quite a popular place to visit and have picnics.

It’s still pretty popular to this day, when we went there were a couple groups of people there wandering around like us. It was a pretty cool place, considering it was a big ol’ cemetery. There were some really creepy (but cool) mausoleums, even one that was a pyramid.

I was searching for the legendary Leonard Bernstein’s grave, but never found it. We did find Aaron Burr’s grave though, and also found the Minerva statue that they had featured in the PBS program. Minerva stands at the summit of the cemetery, marking the area of a famous battle and saluting her sister The Statue of Liberty in the harbor below.

Overall, it was a pretty cool place. If you ever find yourself down by 25th & 5th in Brooklyn, go and visit it.

Sometimes I cry
'Cause it makes my eyes look bluer
Sometimes I bleed
'Cause red is a good color for me

--Best lyrics ever!!! :)
